Once again the day started with waves of rain in the early morning and just pulsing through for the entire day. We didn’t plan any activity for today due to the predictions of the wet weather. We had clouds and rain. I think the pics of the rain look a little impressionistic. This is a new face of Nice for us because in our previous visits we’ve experienced almost no precipitation. The rain we’ve had has been just a few minutes and then gone for the rest of the day. However, up to now the rain has been coming in the nights. We do have more concrete plans for the next several days and regardless of the rain we’ll be getting out and doing the things we’ve planned.
Since we had a variety of things that we bought a couple days ago and it being Sunday we decided to have lunch at home. Our provisions include pate de campagna, a truly artisanal Brie cheese, really good green olives, and the remains of yesterday’s Bordeaux. I also finally found a good boulanger that’s only about 5 minutes from the house, so we had a good baguette. I was informed that there has been distinct interest in the deserts of late. So to elucidate; at the Boulanger I bought us some little darlings for after lunch. I got a coffee eclair, a Paris Brest, and a Reine Claude plum tart, the first two went down a treat after lunch. Then we shared the tart for our evening snack, strictly medicinal. Deb spent a little time getting a reservation for lunch at Dante on Tuesday. Tomorrow will be our first opportunity to engage with the brocantes that display in the Cours Saleya every Monday. We have had mixed success at the market in the past, but every encounter is a new chance to fleece the natives. Then on Wednesday we plan to go up to Vence and visit the Matisse Chapel that was built in that village. It is a close neighbor to St.Paul de Vence which is where Fondation Maecht is located and that is on our radar as well. More to come. For today however we, once again, headed out to the Promenade des Anglais to see an entirely new view of the Mediterranean. One where the water is churning and the wind is blowing strongly and you can see the squalls as they move across the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels) and into the city. We were able to sit for quite a number of minutes before the rain made us beat a retreat. When we arrived the surface color of the water was a very light grey and it progressively changed colors. Next it became an almost olive green changing to a beige as the clouds move in. As the horizon became obscured with precipitation it finally changed to a grey green and then the drops started falling. We also noticed for the first time that the headlands between Nice proper and Villefranche-sur-Mer has a lighthouse and it was in full action today. My new raincoat was stellar,
I was completely dry under the coat, not so much for my pants legs below nor for my shoes. But the rain was not very heavy at that point, so we made our way back to the apartment. When we got to the far corner of our block, the wind really picked up and the rain fell more industriously. So we skittered from awning to doorway all the way down the block and got back to the apartment in good order. The waves of rain have been coming through all evening but we’re warm and dry. Tomorrow will take care of itself.
